Abstract:
The Internet of Things will include some things that you would expect like automobiles, wearables, and smart meters. What about valves, actuators, generators, and even smart door latches for refrigerated shipping containers? Functioning correctly, a simple device like a valve can safely control millions of dollars of crude oil flowing down a pipeline – functioning incorrectly the same crude oil is spilling into the ocean. Remote sensors and remote control are components of what’s called “Cyber-Physical Systems” and are becoming critical components of the evolving IoT landscape. This discussion will identify applications where Machine-Type-Communications services make economic sense, and panelists will discuss the merits and drawbacks of using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and wide-area 2G thru 5G mobile data technologies to connect them.
