Deadly earthquake topples buildings in Taiwan city of Tainan
An earthquake has toppled buildings in the southern Taiwanese city of Tainan, killing at least 11 people. The magnitude 6.4 quake struck just before 04:00 (20:00 GMT Friday) when most people were at home asleep.

Did You Know? If all the dishes fall out of your cabinet, you may honestly be able to say, “It’s the Earth’s fault!” Indeed, the Earth has faults, cracks where sections of its outer shell (the lithosphere) slip past each other, causing an earthquake when subjected to great forces.
All 50 states and 5 U.S. territories are at some risk for earthquakes. Earthquakes can happen at any time of the year.
On April 18, 1906, the earth moved. Not only did the ground shake on the day of the Great San Francisco earthquake, but land on both sides of the San Andreas fault permanently shifted. Precise measurements of the amount of motion led scientists to discover why earthquakes happen. Fences across the San Andreas fault ripped apart, and it was no longer clear who owned the land nearby. Surveyors went to mountain peaks to relocate the property boundaries. While the fences showed that ground had moved near the fault, the surveyors also discovered that much of northern California had moved and distorted during the earthquake. The movement followed a pattern with most of the motion near the fault and less motion far away. At the time, nobody knew what caused earthquakes.
