2021 GCTC Agriculture and Rural SuperCluster Workshop

NIST and its partners, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NIST), NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association, Joint Venture Silicon Valley and Purdue University invite you to attend the Global City Teams Challenge (GCTC) Smart Agriculture and Rural Broadband SuperCluster workshop, including a special session on Federal funding and Tribal programs.
This is a hybrid event in which Purdue University is hosting the SuperCluster workshop for in-person participation and on Zoom.
Join us to learn about best practices and challenges related to their projects in agriculture, rural connectivity, Tribal regions and STEM. The workshop will also highlight the preliminary blueprint for rural communities, recently released by the Global City Teams Challenge (GCTC) Smart Agriculture and Rural Broadband SuperCluster. Participants will then develop next steps, including case studies for 2021/2, and best ways to map the coverage of broadband services – a critical issue for smart agriculture and rural areas. Registration is free. On Thursday July 22nd afternoon, after the workshop, in person participants have the option of touring the nearby Innovation centers at Purdue University. We will have a tour and deep dive on WHIN Aerostat and rural testbed on Friday morning.

- Digital Manufacturing Testbed 5:00 pm, Optional Disc golf outing (Slater Hill on Purdue campus) Session 9: Friday, July 23, 2021, AM – WHIN Ag Alliance “System,” Benefits, and WHIN Aerostat visit – Pat Corey, VP of Engagement, Wabash Heartland Innovation Network (WHIN) The Wabash Heartland Innovation Network (WHIN) has deployed an RTO Wireless AeroSite, flying at 1500 feet, to test the feasibility of using fiber-tethered aerostat technology to provide both access and backhaul for rural areas. WHIN’s aerostat is located in White County, Indiana, about 25 miles north of Purdue University. Its telecommunications capability includes LoRaWAN, supporting digital ag and manufacturing technology in WHIN’s Living IoT Lab. The aerostat also carries 5.8 GHz gear for initial broadband testing before CBRS technology is deployed later this year. The aerostat is part of WHIN’s research network, which will be used to generate publically available use cases to address technology and business issues for both broadband and narrowband rural applications.
